What is Alternative Medicine?

Since this site is dedicated to alternative medicine and alternative health therapies, I think it is a good idea to answer this question:
What is Alternative Medicine?

What is Alternative Medicine?

The term “alternative” medication could be a extensive one that describes variety of health and healing ways. Generally, once mistreatment “alternative” you're talking concerning healthful and general health practices, products, etc. that don't seem to be an area of society’s typical medical systems.
Sometimes cited as “complementary” medication once employed in addition to, as against rather than, conventional systems, the term can cover everything from folk medicine to faith healing to therapeutic massage. In other words, if you can't study at a medical school or learn it in a traditional hospital, it is considered "alternative."

Because such a lot of totally different approaches to health and well being are lumped beneath the choice heading, it may be troublesome to make your mind up whether or not or not to take any of them seriously. Fad diets, homeopathy, treatment, herbology, yoga, probiotics and new age healing are simply a number of of the alternatives that be practice of medicine.

But however are you presupposed to understand what's real from what's quackery?

There are many sources that try to support alternative medicine practices through scientific research. A quick search of the library or the internet will lead to a lot of research and first-hand experience to prove or refute the value of any alternative method you can name. Ask friends and family, if they have tried specific treatments or practices, you will be surprised to find out how many people are receiving alternative therapies outside of traditional medicine. Many of us have used alternative medicines without realizing it. Remember that when you were sick, Grandma insisted on her special chicken soup, or did a friend recommend a yolk mask for acne just because it was made by her mother? These are good examples of alternative medicine, where there is a lot of research showing that they have real-world value. When sick, chicken soup is easy to eat and provides the necessary hydrating, vitamins, minerals and protein to help you recover. The high protein in the egg yolk can soothe and enrich the skin, as it dries it to absorb impurities without adding any oil or over-drying. Just because doctors don't ban them doesn't necessarily mean they don't work.

Some alternative medicines have been accepted by the traditional medical community. Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine and has been practiced for thousands of years and is considered traditional in many Asian countries. However, acupuncture is only suitable for pain management in the United States. Acupuncturists claim that it can help all aspects of weight loss and infertility, but this has not been clearly confirmed in scientific research. Practitioners in the United States are well trained and must obtain a license before treating a patient. The license is not absolutely reliable, but it does provide you with an extra guarantee for high standards of professionalism. Further evidence is that many insurance companies will be treated by licensed acupuncturists.

Pay special attention when choosing to use alternative medicine. Be sure to do your homework. Although putting eggs on your face may not be a problem, taking herbs without knowing how they interact with other drugs or knowing the proper dosage can cause serious problems. Unlicensed doctors like acupuncture can cause serious injuries. You should consult your current health practitioner to discuss the alternative medicines you are considering. Be sure to carefully weigh the risks and benefits before trying anything new. Always let every health professional know all your medical history and current status.

Many people have found good results from alternative and complementary medicine. As you explore these "new" options, you may find ways to take care of your body and mind hundreds of years ago, which are ignored by today's Western medicine. Careful research and prudent methods can help you achieve a better lifestyle and enjoy health.
